FAQs
Q: Our swimmer is new to the world of swimming. Can they join the team?
A: Absolutely! We welcome all levels of swimming ability for all ages under 18. Our summer swim team is a place where everyone can have fun, become water-safe, and discover a passion for the sport of swimming. For 8 and unders, see our Green vs. Blue page here to understand the baseline for our youngest swimmers better.
Q: How many times does our family need to volunteer at meets?
A: Four sessions or two full meets. Volunteering is crucial to running our meets and season, so thank you in advance! To sign up, visit our volunteer page here.
Q: When are practices?
A: Practices are held Monday through Friday, with meetings every Wednesday night during the regular season. See our practice times page here for detailed schedules. Note the change in practice times between the preseason and regular season.
Q: Which practices should I bring my kids to? The morning or afternoon workout?
A: The morning workout is the primary session with more lane space and coaches. However, we understand some families cannot attend morning workouts due to work or camps, so we offer afternoon workouts for flexibility. During the regular season, Thursday afternoon will have a regular practice, and there will be no workout on Wednesday evening due to the meeting.
Q: What is a swim meet like? What does a DQ mean? How do meets run?
A: Almost all meet-related questions can be answered on our About Meets page here.
Q: I am worried my swimmer won't score at meets or JSL champs. Should I still sign them up?
A: Absolutely. Wednesday evening meets and JSL champs are great opportunities for swimmers to enjoy time with friends and experience new challenges! These events are often highlights of the summer for many swimmers.
Q: How do I know if my swimmer is meet-ready?
A: Swimmers must be able to complete races in a timely and legal manner. Coaches will assess each swimmer's ability to meet these benchmarks in the days prior to each week's meet.
Q: What should my swimmer bring to practice and meets?
A: Swimmers should bring goggles, a suit, a towel, and a water bottle to practice. For meets, it's a good idea to bring an extra set of practice items, snacks, a chair, and games to pass the time.
Q: How do I register my child for the swim team?
A: You can register your child for the swim team by visiting our registration page here and filling out the necessary forms. If you have any questions during the registration process, please contact us.
Q: What are the fees associated with joining the swim team?
A: Fees can be found on our team registration page here.
Q: What should we do if we need to miss a practice or a meet?
A: The goal of summer swim is to improve water safety, and enjoyment of the sport. Thus missing practice or meets is totally okay! We understand that families go on vacation, parents have job, kids have camps or other sports, so there are no practices or meet requirements for the team. Note that to compete in JSL champs, a swimmer must complete two regular season meets. With that said, consistency is crucial for improvement in swimming, and if swimmers plan to miss a meet, the coach should be notified through the meet form here or via email if something changes.
Q: Are there any special events or team activities?
A: Yes, we have several special events and team activities throughout the season, including ice parties, laser tag (13 and up), bowling (12 and under), a JSL kickoff party, and a team banquet. Check our events page here for more details.
Q: What is the procedure for weather cancellations?
A: In the event of inclement weather, we will notify families via our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter) about any practice or meet cancellations. Please check these sources regularly for updates.
Q: How can parents stay informed about team news and updates?
A: Parents can stay informed by joining our team's Facebook group and twitter, through emails, and regularly checking our website for updates and announcements.
